Needling
Trigger point dry needling (TDN)
Trigger point dry needling (TDN) involves inserting a thin filament needling through the skin into muscle tissue. The goals of TDN are to reduce pain, improve soft tissue mobility, improve motor function of muscles, and aid in return to baseline function.
What you will experience:
TDN can be uncomfortable while you are receiving it. You may notice a twitch in the muscles and a deep achy feeling.
It is common to have some soreness for the following 24-48 hours. This will slowly dissipate.
You may have a small amount of bleeding below the skin (a bruise) or as the needle is removed. The needle is very small, so the bleeding will not persist.
You may feel fatigued after this treatment as your body detoxes and energy goes into the healing of the muscle tissue. Listen to your body and continue with gentle movement for the next 24 hours.
It is common to experience sweating, nervousness, or other signs of stress during the treatment. We will work together to not overload your body.
Adverse side effects:
The most serious of the adverse side effects is called a pneumothorax. This means the needle has punctured the tissue of your lung. The needles used are thin enough for the lung tissue to generally heal without intervention, though this is extremely rare, and training and experience make it easy to avoid this situation.
The other common side effects are listed above: soreness, fatigue, and bruising.
Contraindications:
This will not be your modality if:
You have a fear of needles
You have a bloodborne disease
You have an infection in the area we would needle
You have lymphedema in the area we would needle
